During the Civil War, the south was damaged and disables. Many people had died and many farms were destroyed. Southern plantations were no longer run with slavery. The South surrendered and became part of the Union again. There were consequences for the southern states but they needed to rebuild. Reconstruction was a period of great hope, incredible change, and efforts at rebuilding.
To understand Reconstruction and race relations in the United States, you will be learning about the different aims of reconstruction and how influenced the course. You will be looking at the political, economic, and social effects of Reconstruction on different populations in the south.
